About Us

The achievement of "fathering" and "mentoring" youth is a proven solution for providing hope, stability and wisdom to our youth; and these values are at the core of what Heroes Camp offers. Our community, like others, has experienced a growing number of fatherless households and we all know that this profoundly impact a young person's identity. There are hundreds of youth who visit Heroes Camp each week and they all leave with a sense of belonging and fulfillment.

Basketball is the primary physical activity of Heroes Camp but we also make available many other activities including cardiovascular training, organized games, personal training, ping pong, etc. We focus largely on life skills, leadership, discipline, respect, responsibility, job readiness, and interpersonal relationships. Services which assist and support youth such as college placement assistance, attending school functions (sports, extra curricular activities, graduations, and teacher/coach consultations), crisis intervention, and court advocacy are woven into our programming. We also teach the children how to care for and feel good about themselves through workshops on nutrition, hygiene and grooming. (There are barbers who donate there time each Saturday to give children FREE hair cuts. You should see the smiles when they're done!).

Heroes Camp offers a wide range of services! We realize that youth face all kinds of issues outside the regular hours of operation and our staff have dedicated their lives to "being there" for the youth. Many times, the calming words of a father figure and/or a mentor can speak peace to an escalating situation. Because of the establishment of trusting relationships, these youth feel free to reach out when a compromising situation presents itself. We're grateful to have the opportunity to help our youth make good decisions.

Heroes Camp has a committed staff of volunteers who are all great role models in our community. Some of these staff members are former Campers and they, like the Magleys, have dedicated their lives to serving Michiana's youth; collectively offering over 150 years of mentoring experience.

Directors: Patrick and B.J. Magley

Pat Magley is a 1971 graduate of LaSalle High School where he was a leader both on and off the basketball court. He went on to attend Moberly Junior College and West Georgia College majoring in Criminal Justice and Recreation Education and married B.J. in 1975. In May of 1990, Pat left his employment at Berkheimer's and dedicated himself full time to the youth of Michiana. B.J. left her position with United Way to join him in 1992. Pat and B. J., along with their daughter Kelly, have built Heroes Camp into a powerful community outreach for youth.

All of these and other services are provided to the youth FREE of charge!! That's right! Our services are made possible by free-will donations from people like you.
